Did you ever watch a corporate video and say, ‘Wow, that person seems so natural, so comfortable, and they truly know how to convey their message.’ Well, it wasn’t an accident. They followed a process that has proven time and time again to prepare them to speak on camera each time. It goes something like this:
1. Do not READ off of a Teleprompter. Do not READ off of Cue Cards. (let’s face it, we are corporate leaders, not actors, it takes an even deeper skill to deliver scripted dialogue in a more free flowing manner and as though you are reading. Actors train and go to school for years to learn this trait. If you want to come off more natural, just speak more free-flowing. Don’t expect perfect takes, no umms, etc.
2. At the end of the day, your audience will remember how they felt when they watched you in a video. The will not remember the exact words you used. So if that’s the case, why try so hard to force certain words. Work on connecting with your audience (camera lens) or person interviewing you on camera. You do that with eye contact, pauses, feeling, and emotion behind your message.
3. Practice. Practice. Practice. – do not expect to sound like the CEO of a Fortune 50 Company if you do not practice. I have news for you. They practiced and they have a lot of experience being interviewed on camera by National news outlets, Trade Groups, their own internal marketing department and more. Remember, practice is practice. You can always grab a colleague and record each other with an iPhone. Watch it back. You may perceive yourself sounding one way when you deliver the message however when you watch it back, it may sound completely different.
