“I want to give you some tips and pointers on how to improve your video meetings or video chats, whether using Zoom, Skype, Facetime, Facebook messenger, whatever the tool is. I’m going to go over a few things and some common mistakes I see that people are making when it comes to video conferencing or video chatting. First thing is composition. That’s where you are in your frame. Okay. Um, a lot of people are sitting down and they have their, their laptop flipped or the camera is basically just capturing a small part of their face and there’s all this room above from the top of their head to the top of the frame. Uh, you kind of want to center yourself or you want to actually put yourself in something called rule of thirds. If you’re going to bring some text in, like, I’m going to do in this video. Um, but you want to position yourself so that your head is just below the top of the frame and you’re either in the center of the frame or just off to one third. Next is the background. Uh, you don’t want a busy background. Uh, you don’t want, a window is a horrible background. Basically what you’re doing is just imagine putting a flashlight into the camera lens. So if your camera, you’re facing your camera and the window is behind you, then you’re basically just projecting all this light in and then you’re overexposed and it doesn’t look particularly good on top of that, the camera, in most cases, the webcam or your camera on your mobile device is an auto, uh, functioning camera. So it’s trying to compensate white balance from, you know, the fluorescence in your house or the LEDs, which is a certain temperature mixed with the daylight coming in. And depending on what time of day it is, uh, it’s important to not have your background be a window. Okay. This one’s big. I’m sure you get on calls with people and they’re just moving around constantly. They’re walking, they’re talking. It’s really distracting. It’s hard to focus on that individual, especially if you’re in a group video chat and there’s a number of people, there’s always one person moving. Sit still, park yourself, relax, look into the camera when you’re talking or you want to engage somebody. A lot of times like the screen will be off. You can look down at the person, but then kind of look up. Um, real important not to move around.  Shaky cameras cause all kinds of problems when you’re trying to concentrate. And the last tip is when it all possible engage some sort of headset, some sort of Bluetooth headset that’s going to have a microphone built into it. This way you’ll hear clearer, you’ll sound better if there’s background noise. It’s not going to be picked up from the mic that’s on the phone or the laptop. Um, it’s going to basically, a lot of times be noise cancellation, um, or noise, have noise cancellation features in it. So it’ll just capture your sound. And that’s really, really important. So wear a headset, use a microphone and have some fun.”
